Tips For Senior Job Applicants

Today’s economic situation has become quite unpredictable. An increasing number of people who are already of retirement age are still trying to look for some means to earn income. This includes applying for certain jobs.

With more and more retirees having insufficient funds for retirement, the number of older job applicants is increasing. But their age can sometimes be an obstacle into finding work. Depending on your skill set, you may just have difficulties landing a job while competing with younger applicants in the job market. But you can always try to take every advantage you have in order to improve your chances. Here are some tips to help you become more relevant.

Learn how to answer the “overqualified” question.

Because of your age and experience, you should always expect being considered overqualified for the job you apply for. Some employers are not just concerned whether your experience may not fit into the job you are applying for, they also worry whether you may become easily bored with your responsibilities. Try to ease these concerns by finding the right way to answer the overqualified question. Tell the employer that you will want to get back to the basics or even agree to lower pay. Try to convince them just how valuable your experience will be to the job you are applying for.

Learn to boost your social media profile.

For someone who may be older than the typical job applicant, make sure that you try to make yourself relevant in today’s job market. One way to do that is by letting employers know that you are comfortable with using today’s technology. Take social networks for example. Job applicants nowadays maintain a LinkedIn profile or maintain other social network presence. This can indicate that you are quite knowledgeable of today’s technology and feel comfortable about using it.

Limit information you provide in your resume.

Because of years of experience, older applicants may be tempted to place them all into their job resume, expecting that it will give them an edge. But sometimes a bloated resume can be a disadvantage. Employers will not want to read all about your job history, they just would like to find out about your experiences related to the job opening. Limit the information you provide in your resume to those that are recent and relevant. Just list down your job experiences for the recent 5 to 10 years and those that are relevant to the job you are applying for.
